Sad news

21/04/2007

We are sad to announce that Harry Shepherd one of our 'mature' players in the training band has very recently passed away. Although not active in the band in recent years Harry was a regular member of the training band for a good number of years, playing trombone.

Always smartly turned out and with a twinkle in his eye, Harry had returned to playing after a 25 year 'rest period'! and became a great supporter - even participating in our annual solo competition. In more recent times Harry would often be seen watching the band play out and about - always wearing his trademark hat and of course with his dog to-hand.

His funeral will be held at Blacon Crematorium on Thursday 26th April at 3pm, and his daughter Carolyn says that all are welcome. The band has accepted the kind offer of Harry's trombone from Carolyn, and this will be presented to the training band at the concert on June 9th, when a hymn will be played in remembrance of Harry.

Recognising his love for animals Carolyn says that they are accepting donations on behalf of the PDSA in memory of Harry.

Congratulations Brian & Jean

Adjudication

Adjudicator Ian Brownbill

First note not in tune and second bar loose. Much better entry at A but horn falters a little. Piu Mosso flows well - well done back row. Reasonable at B but basses could be more sustained and tuning is poor bassese into C. 2 bars before D starts 'mp' some loose playing into E. Again loose ensemble at G. Good effort sop into H and to follow. Not clean into J. Some nice sounds at K but unconvincing percussion into M and noisy at O! Nice cornet playing and generally the music flows here. Mainly fine through but loose entry at R and sounds not balanced at appasionata. Tom Toms fine at V but I can't hear the timpani! Just watch the finale playing doesn't get too loud. The playing just lacks discipline at times and we don't get anywhere close enough to mp bars of BB.

A performance that had convinction and determination but missing in much of the fine detail - some good individual playing most notably sop.
